Emerging Trump Doctrine Identifies Europe's Fundamental Problem: A Supposed Shortfall of Racism?

During his first term, commentators frequently advised that the former president's statements should be taken seriously instead of literally. However, subsequent events indicate that this approach could have reversed the logic.

A recently unveiled American strategic document alongside multiple statements from U.S. figures, presidential allies, and the former president have sparked potentially one of the most profound crises for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has underpinned stability and freedom in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

While The initial complaint focused on Europe's alleged failure to pay for its own security, his rhetoric has now evolved into a significantly more disturbing perspective.

Colored by racism and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has spoken about the risk of societal collapse on a continent he barely knows and mostly seen from a distance.

"A lengthy discussion devoid of clear ideological coherence is instead replete with something else: the confused fear of an older man facing a changing world."

A conspiratorial worldview, which has already influenced contentious U.S. immigration and policing policies, now appears to be shaping Washington's understanding of Europe.

The Racist Core

From this vantage point, immigration from developing nations leads to a cultural dilution of European societies, making them "weak" under "foolish" leaders and setting the stage for their eventual decline. It constitutes an openly xenophobic ideology, with the president's allies making clear their support for nationalist movements across Europe.

While the broader theme of this race-baiting is familiar, its meaning for the continent's defense are critically important.

In the view of the president and his adherents—including billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the European Union—all politics is fundamentally a deal. But, whereas he once claimed was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a decadent Europe is fundamentally unworthy due to its embrace of diversity.

Weakening from Within

In his interview, Trump joins these dots in a kind of wish-fulfillment exercise. He concedes that the Kremlin desires a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and in exposing the rifts between Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by actively undermining European cohesion—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is playing out at possibly the most critical moment for Europe since WWII, with a devastating war in Ukraine and rising provocations across the continent.

While Europe draw closer to Kyiv amid continuing warnings of U.S. withdrawal, the peril is that Trump has constructed a justifying narrative for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

This situation requires a firm response from European leadership. While some figures, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been blunt in their rebuttals, others—like the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have opted for a policy of seeking to placate the U.S. administration.

Recently, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his renewed attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

The spokesperson stated, "He has a strong relationship with the American leader and a strong relationship with the London mayor, and is committed to cooperating with each to achieve stronger results for the British public."

The stark reality is that the president intends what he says and repeats them repeatedly. It is past time to stop pretending that things are different.
